More Information About Lowboy Trailers

Owner-operators, trucking company owners or drivers who are interested in used and new lowboy trailers can browse our listings of trailers from some of the top manufacturers in the industry, including Kaufman, Trail King, Talbert, Hyster and Fontaine. Each lowboy trailer listing includes several pictures as well as pertinent information including condition, tire size, deck height, brake condition, floor type and more. Most of the listings also include pictures and links you can follow for more information about shipping, insurance, financing and trailer location.

Heavy trucks and trailers have been around almost as long as personal cars, and they have been used to haul equipment with lowboy trailers since the 1920s. They had solid rubber tires and riveted goosenecks. Many modern lowboy trailers have removable goosenecks. They are known as RGN lowboys and have been in use since their invention in 1958.

There are several types of lowboy trailers that are commonly available. Fixed gooseneck lowboys are light in weight and typically have the longest deck lengths. These trailers usually have low-profile tires and ramps on the back of the deck for easy loading and unloading. Many fixed gooseneck lowboys also have necks that can be used as loading ramps when they are lowered. The most common type of lowboy trailer used today is the hydraulic detachable gooseneck lowboy. The gooseneck detaches with the help of hydraulic cylinders. Detaching the gooseneck makes it easier to load large equipment onto the trailer deck.

Another variance between lowboy trailers is suspension type. Spring ride suspension is the least expensive, however it has a rough ride that may cause stress to the trailer and load. Air-ride suspension is more expensive, but it can usually be adjusted and often adds life to the frame of the trailer. Hydraulic suspension allows for axle movement using a system filled with oil. One type of hydraulic suspension is independent suspension. This type is considered to be superior because it offers more stability as well as greater steering angle than other suspension types.

Lowboy trailers are generally designed with simplicity and function in mind, but there are a few features that may be available on some lowboy trailers and not others.

These features include:

  • Aluminum deck
  • LED lighting
  • Flip axle
  • Pony motor
  • D-rings
  • Load scales
  • Outrigger brackets
  • Automatic slack adjusters
  • Flag holders
  • Toolbox
  • Folding ramps
  • Sliding axles
  • Winches
  • Rub rails
